Wildlife Bridges! Finally!

Friday, September 7th, 2007

One of the nation’s first vegetated wildlife overpasses, or wildlife bridge, is being proposed on I-70, just west of Vail Pass.

You can read more about it at Restore the Rockies.and at Audubon. I have long mourned the amount of animals that die on the road every day/night, day in and day out. With habitat being lost at a ferocious rate, and with what’s left becoming more and more fragmented all the time, I have long wished for animal overpasses that could reduce the carnage and bolster animal populations. The Interstates are virtually uncrossable for bigger animals, and truly uncrossable for smaller, slower animals. Roads create boundaries past which animals cannot migrate, cannot pursue food, and which lower their chances of finding suitable breeding partners. I hope this overpass and the related fencing system to encourage it’s use, will be the first of many, many more.

The other upside, I should point out, is that it would reduce human deaths and property damage, as well.  More at: http://www.safepassagecoalition.org/news/vail_pass.htm
